3D Pop-Up Butterfly and Blossom Card with Envelope

A greeting card that behaves like a small gift. Closed, it is an ordinary pale blue card with three butterflies drifting across a scatter of printed blossom. Open the covers and a paper bouquet lifts off the page – tiered sprays of pink and purple blossom, banks of white florets, yellow daffodils along the base and paper butterflies in orange, red, pink, purple and blue perched at every level.

The card is built from printed card stock, cut and folded into separate layers that are held in place by the fold itself, so nothing has to be glued, slotted or assembled. The scene rises as you open the card and collapses neatly as you close it, which is why it still travels flat in the envelope supplied. A half-moon notch cut into the outer edge gives you somewhere to slip a thumb when opening it. Inside, the panels carry printed daffodils and butterflies around the border, while the writing area is left completely blank.

That blank space is the point: one card covers a birthday, an anniversary, Mother’s Day, Easter, a wedding, a thank you or a get-well note, in your own words rather than someone else’s printed verse. A small matching butterfly note card is tucked in alongside the envelope and works as a gift tag or a second, shorter message.

Because the sculpture stands up on its own, most people leave it out afterwards – on a shelf, a windowsill, a mantelpiece or a desk – long after a flat card would have been put away. It suits anyone drawn to butterflies, gardens or spring flowers: a mum, a nan, a keen gardener, a teacher, or the friend who is hard to buy for and does not need another ornament.
