How to Choose Replacement Furniture Legs: Height, Mounting and Pack Size
Replacement furniture legs can refresh a cabinet, sofa or small table, but appearance is only one part of the choice. A leg that looks right in a photograph may have the wrong height or a different fixing arrangement from your furniture. Start with the existing frame and mounting points, then compare the dimensions and pack contents before ordering.
This guide focuses on the checks you can make before buying. It does not assume that legs described for sofas, cabinets or tables will fit every piece of furniture in those groups.
Start with the height you need
Measure the vertical distance from the furniture’s mounting surface to the floor. Then decide whether you want to retain that height or change it. If you want a taller finished piece, check the complete furniture height as well as the leg dimension; the seat, cabinet body or tabletop still forms part of the total.
For an angled design, distinguish the vertical height from the overall length. Do not choose a replacement from the longest dimension alone. Check any clearance you need beneath doors, drawers or nearby furniture, and allow space for the intended use rather than relying on a product photograph for scale.
Check the mounting method and fixing points
Look at how the original legs attach before selecting replacements. A mounting plate, a threaded fixing and a clip-on cabinet foot are different arrangements. Matching the colour or nominal height does not establish that the connection is compatible.
Record the fixing method and measure the positions of the existing holes. Take a clear photograph of the underside and compare it with the product images or drawing. Overall leg width is not the same measurement as fixing-hole spacing. If a listing does not show the mounting dimensions you need, ask for clarification before placing an order rather than assuming the old holes will line up.
Allow room for the shape of the leg
A straight leg and an angled leg can occupy different spaces beneath the same furniture. Check where the foot will sit relative to the frame edge, skirting board and surrounding furniture. Make sure the proposed position is suitable for the frame’s intended fixing area.
A change in style is also a reason to review the furniture manufacturer’s fitting guidance. Do not remove a centre support or reduce the required number of supports simply because the replacement set contains four legs. The existing furniture’s support arrangement matters as much as the look you want.
Confirm suitability and load information
Check the stated application and any published load rating for the exact leg and fixing arrangement. Steel construction, a wide-looking foot or the number of legs in a pack does not by itself establish the supported weight. Do not calculate a furniture load limit by multiplying an unconfirmed figure by four.
If the furniture carries substantial weight or the frame is damaged, obtain appropriate fitting advice before changing its supports. A replacement leg is not a repair for a weakened mounting area. Keep installation decisions tied to the furniture and fitting manufacturer’s instructions.
Read the dimensions as separate measurements
Our angled chrome steel furniture legs are an example of why each dimension needs a label. The listing gives individual-leg dimensions of 125mm long, 45mm wide and 92mm high, and supplies four legs with plastic glides. The 125mm length should not be read as the vertical height.
These are listed leg dimensions, not a confirmed mounting-plate footprint or hole spacing. Compare the actual fixing arrangement with your furniture before choosing this set. Browse the furniture legs category to compare other heights, shapes and pack sizes; check the exact product or selected option rather than treating category images as a compatibility guide.
Check pack size, finish and supplied fittings
A listing may be for one leg, a pair or a set. Count the supports your furniture needs and read the pack quantity before comparing prices. For the angled chrome set above, the stated pack contents are four legs; do not assume screws, extra plates or other fittings are included unless the listing confirms them.
Check the finish against the hardware you intend to keep. Where a plastic glide is listed, treat that as a product feature rather than a promise that every floor surface will remain unmarked. Follow the relevant care and fitting guidance for your furniture and flooring.
Your checklist before ordering
Write down the required vertical height, fixing method, hole positions, available space and number of legs. Check the stated intended use, any confirmed load information and the supplied fittings. Resolve missing measurements before buying, especially when replacing an existing mounting arrangement.
