Water Butt Overflow Hose: Diameter, Length and Fittings

Buying a replacement overflow hose starts with the connection you already have. A hose that looks similar in a photograph may have a different internal diameter, and the length you need depends on the route it will follow. Before ordering, record the outlet details, measure the route and check which fittings are supplied. This guide focuses on choosing a replacement hose for an existing water butt.

    Start with the existing connection

Find the model name of your water butt and identify the connection the hose will attach to. If you are replacing an existing hose, photograph both ends before removing anything. Record any size markings on the hose and fittings, alongside the measurements.

Keep the tank instructions available. They are the right place to confirm the intended overflow connection and any installation requirements. A product photograph alone does not establish that an accessory fits your particular tank.

    Check internal diameter carefully

The Jumping Bugzy water butt overflow hose listing describes black corrugated PVC hose and labels its sizes by internal diameter. Its options include 13mm, 19mm, 25mm, 32mm, 38mm and 51mm. Internal diameter refers to the opening through the hose, so a measurement across the outside corrugated surface is not the same measurement.

Confirm the size required by your existing fitting before selecting an option. Do not choose purely by the approximate inch label or by comparing photographs. Where the connection details are unclear, send the tank model, fitting markings and clear photographs for confirmation before buying.

    Measure the route

A hose may need to pass around a stand or beside other equipment. Measure the route you intend it to follow, including any bends. Think about access to the connection and whether the hose will interfere with the lid, tap or nearby walkway.

Compare that measurement with the length options on the product page. Check how your fitting instructions account for the hose ends. Avoid assuming that a flexible hose can be bent to any angle without a limit; confirm the requirements for your chosen hose and installation.

Hose only or a complete kit?

The corrugated PVC overflow hose is supplied as hose only: connectors are not included. If you need replacement fittings as well, list them separately and confirm their compatibility before ordering.

Check both ends of the planned connection. A hose size does not, by itself, confirm the size or type of every tank outlet and accessory. Keep any required connectors, clips or other fittings on your shopping checklist, using the tank and fitting instructions to establish what is needed.

    Review the selected combination

On a product with diameter and length options, select both before checking the displayed price and availability. A list of sizes does not guarantee that every possible combination is offered or currently available.

Review the selected combination again in your basket. This is particularly useful if you have compared several lengths or changed diameter while browsing. If an option will not select, or its details differ from what you expected, ask for confirmation rather than substituting another size simply because it can be added to the basket.

    Before fitting a replacement

Use the installation instructions for your tank and the accessories you plan to use. Confirm where excess water should go and whether the existing connection arrangement remains suitable. This buying guide does not establish an outlet position, drilling location or discharge route for a particular property.

If your existing setup needs altering, obtain the appropriate installation advice before ordering parts. For a new tank, our water butt buying guide covers capacity, shape and checking connection-kit contents.

    Your ordering checklist

    Have the following ready:

Your tank model and existing fitting details.
    The required internal hose diameter.
The measured hose route and selected length.
A list of connectors and fittings needed separately.
The exact diameter and length selected on the product page.

Browse the rainwater tank range for the relevant product details. Jumping Bugzy ships within the UK; collection in the Manchester area requires a prior appointment.
