A water butt can have enough capacity for your garden yet still be awkward to use if the tap sits too low for a watering can. A separate stand may improve access, but choosing one involves more than finding a base that looks wide enough. Start with the tank’s exact model, then check the support shape, stand height and the space around the outlet.
This guide focuses on buying a separate stand. If you are choosing the tank itself, compare its overall size and connections first, then decide whether a compatible raised base is available.
Match the exact tank model first
Find the model name and product code on the tank, its paperwork or the original listing. Capacity alone is not a fit specification: two tanks holding a similar volume can have different bottoms, recesses and support requirements. A familiar brand name is useful, but an exact model match is a stronger starting point.
For example, Prosperplast identifies the Basecan IBAS as a stand for selected tank models. Its published dimensions are 512 mm diameter and 230 mm high, equivalent to 51.2 cm and 23 cm. Those measurements do not make it a universal stand. Check your model against the manufacturer’s current compatibility list rather than assuming that any round tank will fit.
Check Prosperplast’s Basecan compatibility list.
Compare the supporting base, not just the widest point
A decorative water butt may be widest around its middle, while the bottom that rests on the stand is narrower or shaped differently. When comparing dimensions, distinguish the tank’s overall width from its contact area underneath. Also check whether the stand has a rim, recess or shaped top intended to locate a particular tank.
Photographs help you understand the arrangement, but they cannot confirm hidden support points. If the model is not listed as compatible, ask for confirmation before ordering. Do not treat a matching diameter as a substitute for the tank and stand manufacturer’s support requirements, especially when the tank will be full.
Measure the clearance your watering can needs
Measure the can or bucket you normally fill, including its handle position. You need enough room to move it beneath the outlet and remove it again. A tall can with a fixed handle may need a different approach from a low bucket, even if both hold the same amount.
Stand height is only one part of the calculation. The tap’s position on the tank and the shape of its outlet also affect usable clearance. A stand listed as 23 cm high does not automatically provide 23 cm beneath the tap. Compare the assembled arrangement and leave practical room for your hands and the container.
Leave room for the tank’s other connections
Look beyond the tap. Note where the inlet, overflow and any linking hose sit, and check that the proposed stand position leaves those connections accessible. Raising an existing tank changes its position relative to nearby pipework, so review the complete arrangement before buying a base.
Keep the manufacturer’s installation requirements with your measurements, including any instructions about the supporting surface and securing the tank. This buying comparison does not replace those instructions or establish a load rating for an improvised support.
Check what the listing actually includes
An image may show a tank on a stand to illustrate how the parts work together. Read the pack contents separately. The Jumping Bugzy listing for the 51.2 cm round Basecan stand supplies one stand only; the water butt is not included.
Do the same check for taps, connection kits and other accessories shown nearby. Keep the cost and fit of each required item in your comparison rather than assuming that everything in a photograph comes in the box.

Make a short comparison before ordering
Write down the tank model code, required stand model, support dimensions, assembled height, tap clearance and supplied quantity. Check the current availability and listing details when you are ready to order. If a dimension or compatibility point remains unclear, resolve that specific point first rather than choosing from capacity or appearance alone.
