How to Choose a Pallet Cover: Measuring a Loaded Pallet

Choosing a pallet cover starts with the complete load, rather than the pallet name alone. Boxes can overhang the base, a mixed load can be wider near the top, and the height you want to cover may differ from the height of the goods. A shaped cover needs to fit around that whole outline. This guide helps you record the measurements and compare the listed options before ordering.

    Measure the widest loaded footprint

With the goods in their intended storage arrangement, measure the greatest outside length and width. Include projecting packaging, corner protectors and anything else that must sit inside the cover. Check more than one level if the load is uneven. Measuring only the wooden base can miss an overhang higher up.

Write down both measurements with the same units. For example, a load measuring 120cm by 80cm is 1.2m by 0.8m. This is a measurement example, not a claim that a particular pallet or cover will fit. Compare each dimension separately: a cover with enough width may still be too short in the other direction.

Decide how far down the cover should reach

Measure from the highest point of the load to the lowest point you intend the cover to reach. Decide whether that includes the pallet base. Do not assume a product’s listed height includes an extra skirt below the stated measurement.

Think about how you will put the cover on and take it off. A close numerical match does not establish that it will slide comfortably over projecting boxes. If the product page does not state usable internal dimensions, fitting clearance or a size tolerance, ask before ordering when the fit is tight. Avoid inventing your own universal allowance.

Compare the three listed cover sizes

Our waterproof 200gsm pallet cover with vents lists these size options: Small, 1.3m × 0.9m × 2.2m high; Medium, 1.3m × 1.1m × 2.2m high; and Large, 1.3m × 1.3m × 2.2m high. Their listed height is the same; the footprint changes.

Compare your widest loaded footprint and intended covered height with all three figures in the selected option. Increasing from Small to Large does not provide extra listed height. Use the cover dimensions in the size selector and description when comparing fit. If another table on a listing gives different dimensions, confirm what those measurements refer to rather than assuming they describe the opened cover.

Check vents, pouches and fixing points

The product specification lists two top vents, two side document pouches, two eyelets at each corner and top strap eyelets. Check the photographs as well as the written details to decide whether their positions suit your setup. Think about where you will need to read paperwork and how you will reach it with the load covered.

These features describe the cover; they do not establish a humidity-control performance, a guaranteed storage life or a method of securing cargo. Do not infer those properties from the presence of vents or eyelets. Ask about any requirement that is essential for the goods you are storing.

Choose a shaped cover or a flat sheet

A shaped pallet cover and a flat tarpaulin solve different fitting problems. Compare the pallet cover range when you want the listed three-dimensional shape. Browse the tarpaulin range when you need a flat sheet and can plan the overlap and attachment arrangement separately.

For a flat sheet, our tarpaulin size and GSM guide explains the earlier measurement and material checks. A sheet’s length and width are not directly equivalent to a shaped cover’s length, width and height, so compare the actual arrangement rather than the product names.

    Your checklist before ordering

Record the maximum loaded length, width and intended covered height. Check overhangs and access for fitting. Match the complete size label, then confirm any close fit or unclear measurement. Review the photos, vents, pouches and fixing points. Select the correct size on the product page and check its current availability and delivery information before you pay.

Keep your measurements with the order details so that you can check the selected option again. If you are arranging collection around Manchester, contact us to agree an appointment first.
