How to Choose a Garden Hose: Length, Diameter and Fittings
A garden hose is easy to buy in a hurry and surprisingly easy to get wrong. A hose that stops short of the back border, a connector that does not fit the tap, or a set missing the part you expected can all turn a simple purchase into another shopping trip. Start with the route, the connections and the equipment you already own.
This guide explains what to check before choosing a hose for a UK garden, with examples from the Jumping Bugzy range. Check the selected product option for its current price, availability and included accessories before ordering.
Measure the route, not just the garden
Measure from the tap to the furthest area you need to water, following the route the hose will actually take. Include corners, paths and any obstacles you need to go around. A straight-line measurement across a flower bed may underestimate the length needed when you keep the hose on the path.
Allow enough slack to move comfortably at the far end, but avoid buying a much longer hose without a reason. Think about where the extra length will sit and how you will put it away. For a short connection between existing equipment, a cut length may be more practical than a whole coil.
The yellow six-layer reinforced PVC hose offers selectable lengths from 1m to 50m. Use the Pipe Length selector to choose the length you need; do not assume that the main description or photograph identifies the option currently selected.
Keep hose diameter and tap thread separate
The hose bore and the threaded tap connection describe different parts of the system. A hose may be described as 1/2 inch or approximately 13mm, while the tap adaptor is described as 3/4 inch BSP. Those labels do not mean that the two components are the same diameter or that a 3/4 inch tap automatically requires a 3/4 inch hose.
Manufacturer specifications make this distinction clear. Cellfast lists its ECONOMIC watering set with a 1/2 inch hose and a G3/4 threaded tap connector. When comparing products, read the hose diameter, hose-end connector size and tap thread as separate specifications.
If you are keeping an existing sprayer or reel, note its required hose size and connection type before choosing a replacement. If the size printed on an old component is unclear, identify the model or ask for help rather than choosing solely from its appearance.
Decide between a hose and a complete set
A bare hose can make sense when you already have suitable fittings, a nozzle and storage. A set can be convenient when you are starting from scratch, but compare the contents carefully. The word “set” does not tell you whether a reel, tap adaptor or spray gun is included.
The 20m, 13mm garden hose set with spray gun lists quick-connect fittings and a hand sprayer. Compare its stated contents with the pieces you need at both ends. Check the tap connection separately if you are replacing an older arrangement or using a different tap.
Check every connection before ordering
Work through the system from the water source to the accessory: tap thread, tap adaptor, hose-end connector, hose, then sprayer or sprinkler. Write down the required size at each connection. This helps avoid buying a correctly sized hose with an incompatible fitting.
For a compatible threaded outlet, the brass 3/4 inch BSP tap connectors have a female threaded end and a quick-connect hose connection. They are supplied as a pair. Check that your tap has the matching thread; an unthreaded indoor mixer tap needs a different type of adaptor.
Do not assume that fittings which look similar are interchangeable. Compare the stated compatibility and sizes, including any reducer or washer required. If a product description and its selector appear to disagree, clarify the intended option before placing the order.
Compare construction with your routine
Look beyond colour and the headline number of layers. Consider how often you move the hose, whether it passes around corners, and whether it must fit an existing reel. Read the construction and handling information for the specific product rather than assuming every reinforced hose behaves the same way.
The yellow hose is listed as six-layer reinforced PVC with a 1/2 inch bore. Those details help identify what you are buying, but they do not replace checking its length, connectors and suitability for your equipment. Compare the complete specification and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for use.
A quick checklist before checkout
- Measure the actual route from the tap to the furthest watering point.
- Choose the correct length in the product selector.
- Check the hose bore and hose-end fittings separately from the tap thread.
- List what is included and what you already own.
- Check compatibility with your reel, nozzle or sprinkler.
- Confirm the selected option’s price and availability.
