Automatic Sensor Kitchen Bin 50 L, Touch-Free, Black

Most kitchen bins ask for a foot on a pedal or a hand on a lid at exactly the moment when neither is free. This one does not. An infrared window set into the collar watches the space above the opening, and when a hand, a plate or the end of a chopping board comes within roughly 15 to 25 centimetres, the lid swings back on its own. Tip the waste in, step away, and after about five seconds of stillness the lid settles back onto the rim by itself.

The shape is a plain, tall cylinder in gloss black, ringed at the top with a bright chrome-effect collar and finished with a soft, non-gloss lid panel. Underneath, a moulded plastic base with concentric ribs keeps the bin sitting flat on tile or board. Inside the rim sits a separate ring that presses down over the edge of the liner: it holds the bag exactly where you put it, so the plastic does not creep down inside once the bin starts to fill.

Four AA batteries in a compartment under the lid are all it needs, which means no cable trailing across the floor and no socket given up beside the units. A switch on the back of the lid turns the sensor off completely for cleaning or storage, and a small indicator on the front reports what the bin is doing, including a yellow flash when the cells are close to spent. Two buttons on the same panel take over whenever you want them to: one holds the lid open while you clear a board or sweep up, the other shuts it and hands control back to the sensor.

Fifty litres is a household bin rather than a desk bin, and because the capacity goes upwards rather than sideways it will stand at the end of a run of units, in a utility room, beside an island or in a walk-in pantry. It suits kitchens that cook a lot and get through packaging, and rooms where people arrive at the bin with both hands full. Since the electronics live in the lid, treat it as something to wipe rather than wash: a damp cloth over the body and the collar, no rinsing under the tap, and the induction window kept out of direct sunlight.
